An important message from Chairperson Parker regarding burial funds (20 July 2004)

"The Caddo Nation is unable to draw down funds at this time because of the ongoing dispute between five Council members and the current Chairperson and administration. These five Council members have requested the retrocession of all P.L. 638 programs funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This would have a disastrous effect on tribal members because they would no longer be able to obtain services through the tribal offices but will have to request these services from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Effective immediately, the Caddo Nation is unable to draw down burial funds. All Caddo tribal members are advised that because of this, there is no burial assistance available through the Caddo Nation. If a tribal member is in need of this service, they are advised to contact Sally Allen at the social services office at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Agency in Anadarko. There is no set amount for which tribal members can obtain burial assistance, but rather the requests will be considered on a 'need' basis only as long as there is money available at the Anadarko Agency for this. This is only one service that is affected, and it is in effect immediately because the Caddo Administration has exhausted resources for this service and can draw no money down until this dispute is resolved. If the BIA does in fact take back all moneys allocated for services to Caddo members, many other services will be affected, such as social service assistance and education assistance. LaRue Parker, Chairperson, Joyce Hinse, Vice Chairperson, and Frances Kodaseet, Oklahoma City Representative, are opposed to this and have been working to prevent this from happening."
